When I Learned How To Motivate Students My Life Changed
Student Motivation…Getting students to WANT to show up, WANT to work hard and WANT to be engaged is the hardest part of teaching high school.
When I first started teaching, I actually thought that students would WANT to learn and be naturally driven to try their hardest. I know, you are laughing right now. Yeah me too.
I was so bothered.
Students were not motivated
These silly teens thought they could just not turn things in. Or, that they could turn assignments in half done just so they could get a passing grade. And the one that drives me most crazy, my students thought they could answer questions the quickest way possible instead of the best way.
The struggle was real!
The real issue was that I couldn’t figure out if my high school students actually didn’t know how to do the work and needed help, or if they were just lazy and didn’t really care.
This just wasn’t going to work for me and I had to fix it…or quit.
It takes changing mindsets and learned behaviors BEFORE being able to motivate students
I had my work cut out for me before I could even begin to increase student engagement. I had to completely re-work mindsets first.
Let’s just say figuring this out took some time, like 16 years. After working in a system that at times promotes low expectations, I’ve perfected my own.
I’ve created a successful step-by-step classroom management process where students do the messy work and learn more.
Students will want to come to your class and be engaged
They will hold themselves to high standards and will work hard for you. It is amazing.
When students are engaged, they choose to show up each day, ready and willing to learn.
When students are engaged, you have so much extra class time to work with your them, and you also don’t have classroom management disruptions.
And it is a game changer. I promise.
Here’s the thing I didn’t realize would change when I finally nailed my classroom management and got my students engaged…
MY LIFE
My life changed for the better. And yours can too.
What exactly changed you ask?
- I’ve learned to shut out the noise and the door to do what’s best for my students and myself.
- I have more energy for my life.
- I have so much more free time on the evenings and weekends.
- I now have a classroom I love to be in.
- I love my weekends, yes, even on Sunday evenings!
I’ve saved the best for last…
A BONUS!
How my life changed when I figured out how to motivate my students
I am truly living my life. After work, I am fully present wherever I am and who I’m with. And at work, I am fully present in my classroom and with my students.
You can change your life too when you learn how to motivate students
You CAN go to work each day to a room you love, work fewer hours and get more done – then put it all aside and have the energy for that crazy home life that is all yours! And…you’ll be able to make time to rest & rejuvenate.
Students WILL work hard for you and themselves, want to show up to your class because they see the value in it, actually enjoy it, and reach the high standards you set.
The 5 Steps to Successfully Motivate Students
Here are the steps to getting your students engaged:
- Make few rules but follow them to a “T”
- Set high expectations and only accept work of the standards you set
- Talk to students about how you know they can do it
- Make students do the messy work & figure out what they did wrong
- Don’t waste your time…or theirs
Do you want that too? Then you’re in the right place.
