How to Write a Conclusion Paragraph

The conclusion paragraph is often the most poorly written paragraph of an essay. It doesn’t seem that important; the writer is wiped out by the end, and often many just don’t know how to conclude the essay.

However, the conclusion is what leaves the lasting impression because it is the last part of the essay that is read.

The Conclusion Paragraph Matters!

Not only should the conclusion to leave a strong lasting impression, the goal is to make the reader care enough to want to do something, believe something, or act on something.

That is a lot of pressure for a paragraph! Don’t worry though-I’ve got you covered. Writing a conclusion paragraph isn’t hard once you learn these steps!

The conclusion paragraph is broken down into 3 sections:

  1. Topic Sentence
  2. Supporting Sentences
  3. Closing Sentence/Call to Action

The Topic Sentence

The first sentence of the conclusion is the topic sentence. Start this paragraph by restating the thesis in a fresh way.

The Supporting Sentences

Next, identify the main point for each section. Then, turn those main points into sentences.

The Closing Sentence/Call to Action

The closing sentence is also called the Call to Action. And that’s the point…make readers care enough to do what you are calling them to do.

Conclusion Paragraph Strategies

  • Don’t start the concluding paragraph with In conclusion; that was a tool to use in teaching how to write it.
  • Don’t use quotes in the conclusion.
  • Avoid using cliches.
  • Don’t make the paragraph too short. It should be equal length to the rest of the other paragraphs.

And that’s it! Follow these steps and you’re on your way to great essay writing!
