How to Write an Introduction Paragraph
The introduction paragraph is just that. Its job is to introduce what you’re writing about to the audience. Basically, you are saying “this is what I’m going to teach you.”
Writing a solid introductory paragraph isn’t too hard once you learn the steps.
You want your introductory paragraph to be broad and assume the reader isn’t familiar with your topic, so make it easy to understand. You want them to want to read more, not overwhelm them.

There are 5 main tasks of the introduction paragraph:
- Grab the readers attention
- Explain its relevance to the reader
- Introduce the topic
- Outline the main points
- States the thesis
The introduction paragraph is broken down into 3 sections:
- Hook
- Supporting sentences
- Thesis statement
The Hook
Let’s talk about the hook. That’s what it is supposed do…hook the reader into wanting to read more. So, in the first sentence, captivate your reader.
The Supporting Sentences
These are also called the outline sentences because you are really outlining the main points of your essay.
The Thesis Statement
The most important sentence in your entire essay. It’s the last sentence of the introduction paragraph and its job is to tell the reader what the rest of the essay is about.
Introduction Paragraph Strategies
- Avoid too much detail in your introductory paragraph.
- Avoid using cliches.
- You may want to wait until after you have outlined your essay to write your introduction paragraph
- Avoid using quotes in your introductory paragraph
